Excellent for small quantities

Munchkin Fresh Feeding Starter Set

Munchkin Fresh Feeding Starter Set

I was looking for a baby food mill for my youngest grandson (having used one for my kids and my older grandkids) so I was thrilled to be offered this set to review.
The Munchkin Fresh Feeding Starter set is a great idea! It consists of 3 items:

1. The Munchkin Baby Food Grinder - I LOVE this thing and have loved it since I purchased my first one 31 years ago! BTW, it never broke, it was merely outgrown. Yes, I have a high end food processor, and a blender, both would mush up food. But, neither of which will fit in a diaper bag! And that is where this grinder comes into it's own. We use it all the time in restaurants. It's also a blessing when visiting, as baby food can be made from the same meal the others are sharing. I find it easy to use, a snap to clean, and very effective in use. No plug in or batteries required! BONUS!

2. The Fresh Food Freezer Trays - These are basically ice cube trays with covers. They are designed to freeze, then store the prepared food. Instead , I find they are useful to freeze the food, but then pop them out and store in a freezer bag. That allows the trays to be put right back into service, important to us, as we grow much of our own food and process large quantities at a time.

3. The 2-in-1 Chopper/Steamer - The chopper is very similar to a TV product where you open a lid, place food inside, and when the lid is closed, the food is pushed through blades into a container below. This particular one has only one blade that cuts into square shapes. You remove the cutter portion of the set, replace it with the steamer lid, and microwave. The result is then the perfect finger foods for older babies, or they could be put though the grinder for the youngest eaters.

Overall, if fresh, homemade, wholesome baby food is your goal, this kit has it all.

The Munchkin Fresh Feeding Starter Set is pretty complete. The additional products are also nice, but you can do it all with this starter set.

Mothers who are concerned about the ingredients in their family's foods will love the control and ease of this kit. You can use foods from meals in progress or make food ahead and freeze it. How ever it works in the schedule, it will provide what you need to cut, chop, steam, grind, and freeze portions of your own healthy foods for your little one. Stay-at-home moms and even working moms (and dads) will be able to make nutritious, safe individual foods, meals, and desserts (fruits, etc.) for baby in a flash.

I highly recommend this for new moms and shower gifts (or any gift before baby starts on first foods).

So I am on my third child and yet again making my own baby food. I already have a lot of gadgets from the 2 previous kids but what attracted me to this set is that I could just make a small quantity instead of using my stove and pots to steam, etc. So here are the pros

    1. The steamer basket does an excellent job in the microwave. Unless you are dealing with something like carrots the chopping attachment isn't necessary. I do think that this attachment is ideal for making finger foods with your veggies. For example chopping carrots and then steaming them so that your child can eat them as a finger food.

    2. The ice trays are excellent for stage 1. If you are in stage 2 you would probably need 3 cubes for a meal. Thus you may want to order more trays because this comes with 2 trays and 24 slots. You would go through this quickly especially if you want to make different foods. I like to make food 1-2 a week so this isn't enough for me.

    3. Easy to clean! This was so easy to clean. It comes apart and all goes in the dishwasher. It does take up a good bit of space so I just ran a load with my off brand baby bullet.

    Cautions/Cons:

    1. I don't really find the grinder helpful. It makes VERY small quantities at a time. My thought on this is that it would be better to use when you have cooked a meal for your family and want to grind up a little for your child. For instance, you could put a little spaghetti or a rice dish in there and make it edible for your child. It is just a small amount so not really good for more than 1 meal unless you want to spend a lot of time grinding. Personally, I prefer my off brand baby bullet because I like to make most of my food in larger quantities. However, when she gets older I do think the grinder will be handy.

    2. The ice cube trays are very tricky to get your cube out. I really find it hard to get the "ice cubes" out. What I am doing to get around this is I freeze a few (I ordered more trays) and then move them to the fridge to defrost as I feed her from them. I find that ALOT easier.

Overall, I love this system and it has gone a long way to cut down on my time. Instead of steaming with my medium pot and attachments on the stove for 20 min, it is done in 2-3 min. Not to mention there is a lot less clean up. I also find that I am making more diverse meals and offering 2 different veggies with her meal because it is so quick to make a 2nd batch of something different. I highly recommend this set with the realization that the grinder will be more effective as your child gets older.
